Born in Mexico, D.F., Dr. Eddie A. Garcia grew up a Texan in the Rio Grande Valley. A graduate of McAllen High School in 1980, he moved on to Harvard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Graduating cum laude with a degree in Biology in 1984, he began his medical education in Dallas, at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Once graduated, Dr. Garcia stayed on at the system’s Parkland Memorial Hospital to complete an internship in General Surgery.
In the process of narrowing his professional interests, Dr. Garcia volunteered for service in the U.S. Navy, and graduated from the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute as a designated Naval Flight Surgeon in April of 1990. Assigned to a U.S. Marine Corps fighter squadron in California, Lieutenant Garcia saw combat action and was decorated for his service during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. The Navy selected him for Orthopædic Residency training in 1993. Dr. Garcia completed residency training under Navy auspices at the University of California San Diego Medical Center in 1997.
Lieutenant Commander Garcia was then assigned to Naval Hospital Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico where he initiated independent practice and concentrated on his main interest from residency years, arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine. During this assignment, Dr. Garcia became a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopædic Surgery, and became a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopædic Surgeons. He was awarded a coveted fellowship training spot by the Navy, and proceeded to the prestigious Cincinnati Sports Medicine and Orthopædic Center for an additional year of subspecialty training.
Upon completing his fellowship, Commander Garcia was assigned to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland and was appointed Chairman of the Department of Orthopædics. Here, he had the pleasure of caring for a wide range of military and civilian patients, while at the same time teaching resident physicians as a full-time Orthopædic faculty member. He was responsible for the reestablishment of that hospital’s comprehensive Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation division.
Dr. Garcia chose San Antonio to relocate his family and practice upon separating from the military after nearly 15 years of proud service. Since his arrival in San Antonio, Dr. Garcia has added a second board certification, that in Orthopædic Sports Medicine, to his curriculum vitae. Dr. Garcia is fluent in his native Spanish, and English, and has good working knowledge of French and Italian. He looks forward to the opportunity to utilize his advanced skills in the treatment of Orthopædic sports and occupational conditions and injuries, particularly of the shoulder and knee, while providing state-of-the-art care for you and your family.
